I realized over ten years ago that "The List" is the key to marketing success on the Web. In starting my first online business back then, I quickly realized how important it is to have constant communication with my customers. External lists are lists you export from other software or manually create and are stored as simple comma separated files--CSV files in computer speak. They must have a CSV extension on the filename in order for Mailloop to recognize the information contained therein. Each CSV file may contain as much contact information about each subscriber as you are willing to maintain. Columns are identified in Mailloop through a header line that shows up within Mailloop as "Merge" fields. Internal lists are generated by Mailloop, and are stored inside its data folder. There is no need to store, rename, or organize these lists -- Mailloop does all the work for you. This is where Mailloop outclasses its competition and pays for itself. When you create a new newsletter or autoresponder series in Mailloop, your subscriber list is generated automatically and stored in your data folder. Using a subscription form or some similar method, new subscribers can literally add themselves into your list and begin receiving your newsletter or autoresponse series immediately.

After sending any type of message through Mailloop, the Statistics page displays a wide variety of "results" lists, including a list of people that received your message and those whose accounts "bounced" the message back to you. When you stop to think about it, your lists represent many different segments of your business. You have customers, prospective customers, subscribers and so on. If you have more than one newsletter, or more segments to your business, you can see how easily it is to lose control of your lists if you're not careful. I used to think maintaining one list was all that was needed and as people unsubscribed, I would just remove them from my list. I realized, in some cases too late, that the software I was currently using was forcing me into this one dimensional thinking.

The Newsletters and Autoresponders tabs are there for defining each respectively.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I've been marketing online for over ten years now. Mailloop will display all the HTML components as if in a browser window and, if any last minute corrections are needed, you can easily switch to code view to make any changes.

Literally one week after purchasing Arial Email Marketing Director, I was informed through their customer support that the practical limitation of this version of the software was email lists up to 50,000 subscribers. While it could go beyond that limitation, Arial would not guarantee the performance of the software if it exceeded this limitation. Funny how they don't mention that on their Web site. Although Mailloop has only a limited HTML editor, this small drawback is easily overlooked, especially if you're like me and only use a full-featured HTML editor anyway. And no other email marketing software in this price range comes close to Mailloop in the ability to target multiple contact lists so easily and give you the flexibility you need to manage all aspects of your online business.
